Talking TOPA: A Powerful Affordable Housing Tool
Thursday, October 24th from 1-2 PM
RSVP to join us on Zoom!
East Bay Housing Organizations began as a series of informal, monthly brown bag lunches. Affordable housing developers, architects, advocates, city staff, and community activists gathered to discuss how to advance affordable housing in Oakland.
For our 40th Anniversary in 2024, we're returning to our roots! In the spirit of this year's theme, Powerful Legacy, Powerful Future, we're launching a monthly series of virtual Lunch & Learn events, where we will learn from the past 40 years of successful advocacy to help guide us as we mobilize for future action. This series is free and open to the public. RSVP for Zoom information!
Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act (TOPA) is a multi-faceted tool that aims to empower tenants, prevent tenant displacement, preserve affordable housing, and increase homeownership opportunities for renters. TOPA policies are being proposed nationwide, including right here in the East Bay. Hear from EBHO’s Chief Program Officer, Rev Sophia DeWitt, and guests Jasmine Sozi from East Bay Community Law Center and Amanda Fukutome-Lopez from the San Francisco Mayor's Office of Housing. They will discuss how TOPA, as well as another tool, COPA (Community Opportunity to Purchase Act), works, who opposes these tools, and the latest news coming out of Berkeley, where the City Council has moved towards considering COPA.
