Sign Up: In Alignment: Housing Provision, Policing, and Racial Justice
Join the Conversation
Last year, organizations small and large committed to support #BlackLivesMatter and transform their organizations to address racial inequity. How can providers of affordable housing ensure that housing policies and practices are aligned with the clear call for racial justice by reducing negative interactions with police and investing in community wellbeing, the demand to Defund the Police?
This panel discussion highlights intersections where policing and housing provision often overlap and practices to reduce negative interactions.
We will hear from Marcia Lovelace, of First Congregational Church in Oakland about why they created a coalition of organizations and individuals to work together on an alternative model of public safety that makes calling the police less necessary. Ener Chiu of EBALDC will talk about how his organization has responded to calls to defund the police and local calls to increase policing in Oakland's Chinatown after an increase of violence against Asian-Americans. Kaija Carter, Oakland Rights-Based Services Counselor & Organizer with Causa Justa / Just Cause about the role of the sheriff in executing evictions.
