The future is looking bright!

Dear Friend,

It’s been an exciting week!

Yesterday was Election Day, and last Wednesday was East Bay Housing Organizations’ annual membership meeting and celebration, where we elected four new Board members.

Early returns for our endorsed ballot measures are looking promising. While there are many ballots left to count, it looks like 5 out of 6 of EBHO’s endorsed measures are headed to victory.

Our annual membership meeting and celebration was a huge success. Hundreds of members joined us in Oakland to celebrate our past year of affordable housing wins and recommit to the fight going forward.

Read on for more information about what comes next for EBHO and the East Bay.

Sincerely,

 Gloria Bruce, Executive Director

Big victories ahead in Oakland; continuing the fight in Berkeley

Five of six EBHO-endorsed ballot measures are on track to pass at the ballot — Berkeley's Measure M and Measure N, and Oakland's Measure U, Measure V, and Measure Q.

We're particularly thankful to the community for believing in Oakland and saying yes to EBHO's lead ballot measure, Oakland's second infrastructure and affordable housing bond, Measure U. Measure U is currently leading with 71% of returned votes, with victory very likely.

Oakland's 2016 Measure KK created and preserved over 1500 homes with $100 million. Imagine what we can do with $350 million for affordable housing!

Huge thanks to MidPen, Eden, EBALDC, SAHA, BBI, Mercy Housing, Pyatok, RCD, LISC and all the other EBHO members who contributed to these winning campaigns.

Preliminary election results

Screenshot from the San Francisco Chronicle showing preliminary election results for EBHO's endorsed ballot measures in Berkeley and Oakland. The Oakland Measure Q race has already been called, it passed with over 75% of the vote. The remainder of EBHO's endorsed ballot measures all have a majority of votes, though Berkeley Measure L is falling short of the 2/3 requirement it needs to pass. Please click through to the SF Chronicle article for a further breakdown of results in text format.

Continuing the fight in Berkeley

Though it has received a majority of votes so far, Measure L in Berkeley will likely fall short of the 2/3 requirement needed to pass a bond measure. The bond's failure will set back affordable housing development in Berkeley, as the city will have substantially less revenue to dedicate to these projects.

We're heartened that a clear majority of Berkeley residents support funding affordable housing. To get involved in this fight, please join us and email sophia@ebho.org to join our Berkeley Committee.

Last Wednesday November 2, East Bay Housing Organizations held our annual membership meeting and celebration at Nido’s Backyard in Oakland.

Over one hundred EBHO members — including affordable housing residents, developers, architects, contractors, and passionate community members — joined to celebrate our collective successes and recommit to the fight for affordable housing in 2023.

Meet our new Board members

EBHO's newest Board members Lauline Mitchell, Kevin Leichner, Peggy McQuaid, and Linda Coleman pose for a photo after their election at EBHO's annual membership meeting and celebration.

Congratulations to Lauline Mitchell, Kevin Leichner, Peggy McQuaid, and Linda Coleman, East Bay Housing Organizations’ newly elected Board members! We are so excited to have you on board.

Launching our 2023-2026 strategic plan

In addition to electing new Board members, at our celebration last week we launched our 2023-2026 strategic plan. This document was a labor of love created by the staff and Board members who served on our strategic plan committee, Lyons-Newman Consulting, and of course, feedback from our members.

Take a chance to browse through this document and see what our goals are for the next four years and the steps we're going to take to reach them.
