Our communities had an unmet needed for affordable housing funding and emergency rental assistance before COVID19. The next congressional funding package must include a significant investment in affordable housing and housing stability for our communities, through this crisis and into the future.

Representative Barbara Lee is introducing a bill to enact a nationwide eviction moratorium during the health emergency. Ask Rep. DeSaulnier to support it and push for rental and mortgage subsidies to keep residents housed when the moratoriums end.

Subject: Stimulus and emergency funds must stabilize our communities in affordable housing

Message:

Dear Rep. DeSaulnier, For our community’s safety and health, everyone must have a place to call home. I am writing today to ask you to press for the next federal funding package to include a significant investment in affordable housing and housing stability for our communities, through this crisis and into the future. I'm an advocate for affordable housing, and we were fighting hard for tenant protections and expansion of affordable housing before this pandemic. Now, the need is greater than ever. I ask you to press for the next stimulus bill to include an increase in emergency funding to keep people housed and directly address the severe shortage of rental homes that are affordable and available to America’s lowest-income households. Doing so will also create a significant stimulus effect on our economy. I join East Bay Housing Organizations and the National Low Income Housing Coalition in asking you to champion the following: · Emergency rental assistance and eviction prevention · Increase funds for legal services and housing counseling. · Increase investments in the national Housing Trust Fund. · Increase public housing capital funds. There is a backlog of capital repair needs of as much as $70 billion. · Expand and reform the Low Income Housing Tax Credit. * Increase Emergency funds for public housing, HUD housing providers, and other assisted housing providers. In the CARES Act, Congress provided some resources to help affordable housing providers, but additional funds are needed to cover operational costs for other affordable housing providers when so many residents have lost their source of income and thus their ability to pay rent. Nonprofit housing providers in particular do not have the resources to sustain a substantial loss of revenue caused by tenants’ inability to pay rent, and we risk losing tens of thousands of units that have received substantial public investment and provide affordable housing for low, very-low and extremely-low households. This should include not only HUD-assisted developments, but other low income housing, particularly projects assisted with Low Income Housing Tax Credits. Now is the time to strengthen the safety net that can hold our communities through hard times. Thank you for your leadership in ensuring our community will be able to come together and provide the affordable, stable housing each resident needs.
